We're Going Green! - פרויקט גינות קהילתיות של עמותת סידרה

Basma and Faiza from our Community Gardens Project speak
"What you buy in the market tastes like water, but the cucumbers from my garden – you can smell their fragrance twenty meters away!"

Thanks to our Community Gardens Project, Bedouin women in the Negev have constructed several home gardens and are running workshops to encourage sustainable food production that is local and organic. The project reaps benefit from the health, culinary, ecological and social benefits of community gardening. Yes, Negev Bedouin women are (and historically have been) making the desert green!
Basma Abu Skeek from the unrecognized village of Bir al-Mashash explains, "In two days we built six gardens – all at once! And my children help, they know it is our collective responsibility, so when I’m not home, they water the plants. From the garden produce I have prepared mutabbal (eggplant salad), crushed tomatoes, eggplant tabbouleh, shakshuka, and an okra dish". She adds, "And it is so tasty – especially the tomatoes and cucumbers – they are smaller than what you can buy in the market, but the taste is so good. What you buy in the market tastes like water, but the cucumbers from my garden – you can smell their fragrance twenty meters away!"

Faiza, who lives right beside the community gardens, is similarly thankful for the project, "I am so grateful to Sidreh not just because they planted and taught us everything we need to know – how to plant the seeds, what problems we could come across - but they also built the infrastructure, like the fence, the irrigation system and the water collection system. Now when it begins to rain, I tell my children to go listen to the music of the water tank – ‘tuk, tuk, tuk’ – as it starts to fill up. When I think about this project, I really feel love. My son says he wants to bring in a tractor next year and make our farm much bigger and much more productive".

The women are also growing peppers - both hot and sweet, zucchini, faqoos (hairy cucumber), sunflowers, beans, corn, cauliflower, lettuce, mint and grapes! The vegetables and fruit that Basma and Faiza and the other women grow are organic and also a big source of joy for their partners and children! See more photos from the green fields in Lakiya!
